Historical Houses

Nathan Wild is considered to be one of the founders of Valatie and its textile mills. He arrived in Valatie in the early 1800's and founded the first cotton spinning and weaving mills in Valatie in 1811. By 1825, the Kinderhook Manufacturing Company, as it was known, became the first in New York State to switch to power looms. The mills continued to stay in operation until the 20th century by his sons. In 1826, Nathan Wild built a Federal-style residence where he lived with his wife, Sarah, and their nine children. As the family's textile factory prospered, he added on and redecorated the house in the Italianate-style to showcase his wealth and make room for his growing family. The home is currently a bed and breakfast. (Map)

Dr. John Vanderpoel was born in 1796 and died in 1851. He built his house in 1825 and seven years later became the first Valatie Postmaster. He is known for being a good friend, ally and physician to President Van Buren. (Map)
